Apple hardware is well-loved by many and often preferred for its ease of use and sleek looks. Whilst the devices themselves are robust when handled with appropriate care, data storage on Apple devices can still be prone to failure, which can be electrical or physical in nature.
Depending on the size, age and type of Apple Mac device, you may have either a 2.5″ HDD, a 3.5″ hard disk drive or a solid state drive. Apple OS uses HFS+ file system to store data and the latest Macs use APFS (Apple File System). This is different to how Windows stores and maintains files (NTFS) and as such, different specialist data recovery methods are deployed by EADR.

Most later versions of MacBook or iMac come with solid state drives (even soldered directly on to the motherboard), however, older MacBooks and iMacs may still come with a mechanical hard disk drive, or even a Fusion Drive.
An Apple Fusion drive has both a mechanical hard drive and a solid state drive present in the same device and works in a similar way to a RAID. The solid state drive houses macOS as well as frequently accessed items, whereas your files (documents, photos and so on) are stored on the much larger (and slower) mechanical hard drive. Should one of the hybrid drives fail, both sections of the drive are inaccessible.

Almost a miracle.
After taking my ailing computer to the local repair shop, the last thing I wanted to hear was, ‘Your hard drive is corrupt. I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do.’ For me that meant thousands of photographs, a huge music library and 10 years of business documents had effectively vanished.
